Bell's Big Breakthrough is written to help young children understand the technical challenge of the first super sonic flight. Before Chuck Yeager's historic flight, it was thought the sound 'barrier' was an impossible aerodynamic challenge to overcome.
Children are able to see the nervous apprehension of Bell, the main character, as she accelerates closer and closer to Mach 1. The buffeting and vibrations that Bell experiences in the book really did occur as an aircraft approached the speed of sound. Once past Mach 1 however, it was discovered that an aircraft flew normally again.
This historic first proved that an aircraft could fly faster than the speed of sound which opened the door to space exploration today.
The character of Bell serves to encourage young readers to overcome challenges and never give up.
